The 1st Congress of ASSR was held in April
The first Congress of the Asian Society of Stoma Rehabilitation (ASSR)
was organized and hosted by the Japanese Society of Stoma Rehabilitation (JSSR) on April 17-18, 2002, at the Osaka International Convention Center.
The purpose of ASSR is to exchange knowledge, techniques and experiences on stoma care to promote not only health and the quality of life for ostomates, but further their welfare throughout Asian countries.
Approximately 100 medical professionals (doctors, ETs, nurses) from Asian countries and 300 from Japan gathered for one-on-one conversations and discussions on scientific issues and personal relations.
Issues discussed were so widespread to cover surgical technique, complications, stoma care, stoma appliances, enterostomal education, and further how to enhance osotmates' QOL with mental and socio-economical support. Particular emphasis was placed on "Nurse-Surgeon Collaboration " throughout.
Mr.John David Cardosa, President of AOA and Dr. Harikesh G. Buch, consulting surgeon and colostomate from India (Ostomy Association of India), were invited as guest speakers and session panelists who appealed the conditions, problems and needs of ostomates throughout Asia. Dr. Buch was also elected as a member of the Board of Directors headed by the Chairperson Dr.Katsuhisa Shindo of Kinki University School of Medicine.
