Abstract of the 5th Ostomates Survey

Every three years, JOA has conducted a member survey with the goal of using the resulting data to fulfill its strategic plan. Results of the 2005 survey follow.
1003 respondents were randomly chosen from 12,000 members of JOA.

Distribution of Age

Ostomates' Demographics

Senior ostomates such as over 65 years old are increasing every year.

Distribution of Age

Especially, the age of ostomates is most highly distributed on over70 years old.

Distribution of Period after Surgery

Distribution of period after surgery is most largely on 10-20 years.

Distribution of type of ostomy

Colostomates decreased by 10% compared with the result in 12 years ago, while urostomates increased by 6%.

Note;
"double" means an ostomate with both a colostomy and a urostomy.

Ostomates in Japan are given the benefit welfare system.

Japanese ostomates are under comparatively favorable situation in general, given subsidiaries for ostomy appliance, discount benefits of travel fare, and reduction of tax.

Japanese ostomates are prefer drainable pouch to closed pouch, showing a further increase from 1999.

Trend in shift from 1-piece to 2-piece pouching system is upward in between 1996 and 1999.

Satisfaction with Ostomy Appliances

About 80% of ostomates are satisfied with their pouching systems.
Colostomates and urostomates generally show more satisfaction than ileostmates and double stoma ostomates.

Means of discharging feces

A shift between major methods of controlling stool(natural method vs. irrigation) appears to be linked to the lapse of time since surgery.

The number of people who irrigate increases in the mid-range of experience with stoma(5 to20 years).

Anxieties of ostomates in future old age

Ostomates have various anxieties as follows:
The anxieties are to become impossible to perform stoma self-care and to become bed ridden in future.
